Embark on a breathtaking journey through the heart of the Maloti-Drakensberg World Heritage Site with the iconic Giant’s Castle Camp to Injisuthi Camp hike. This 30km trail spans two nights and climbs an impressive 1,200m in total elevation, offering hikers unparalleled views of the Drakensberg mountain range. Following the historic Drakensberg Contour Path, this hike is a celebration of nature, heritage, and human determination.

Trail Highlights and History
The trail owes its existence to Bill Barnes, a former Officer in Charge of the Giant’s Castle section of the Maloti-Drakensberg World Heritage Site. Barnes was pivotal in establishing this route, ensuring hikers could traverse the awe-inspiring terrain between Giant’s Castle and Injisuthi Camps. Today, this trail stands as a testament to his vision and dedication to preserving the Drakensberg’s natural and cultural legacy.
Led by James Seymour, an experienced mountain, nature, and culture guide, the hike is a physical challenge and an immersive journey into the rich history and biodiversity of the region.
Day 1: Giant’s Castle Camp to Bannerman’s Hut (11km)

The adventure begins at Giant’s Castle Camp, a popular starting point known for its stunning views and rich wildlife. The trail ascends gradually, allowing hikers to acclimatize while taking in the dramatic cliffs and expansive grasslands characteristic of the Drakensberg.
The first night is spent at Bannerman’s Hut, a rustic yet charming overnight stop nestled amidst the mountains. This is an ideal location to relax, enjoy a hearty meal, and gaze at the stars, which appear exceptionally vivid in the clear mountain air.
Day 2: Bannerman’s Hut to Centenary Hut (10km)
The second leg of the hike takes you deeper into the mountains, following the Drakensberg Contour Path. This section offers more dramatic elevation changes and awe-inspiring views of rugged peaks and valleys. The terrain varies from lush grasslands to rocky outcrops, keeping the journey dynamic and engaging.
After 10km of challenging yet rewarding trekking, you’ll arrive at Centenary Hut, perched in a picturesque location with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Spend the evening here soaking in the tranquillity of the mountains and preparing for the final day’s journey.
Day 3: Centenary Hut to Injisuthi Camp (9km)
The final stretch to Injisuthi Camp is relatively short but no less spectacular. As you descend through the mountains, you’ll witness the transition from high-altitude terrain to the gentler, rolling hills surrounding the camp. Injisuthi Camp marks the official end of this two-night adventure, offering a sense of accomplishment and the perfect opportunity to reflect on the journey.
Optional Extension to Monks Cowl Camp(Extra Night)
For those seeking to extend the adventure, the hike can be continued for another day to Monks Cowl. This extension includes an overnight stay at Injisuthi Camp before heading onward to Monks Cowl Camp, making it a four-day journey that showcases even more of the Drakensberg’s beauty.
