Baboon Rock and Procession Shelter

Baboon Rock and Procession Shelter Hike

A Challenging and Rewarding Adventure

Baboon Rock, Cathedral Peak Area, Drakensberg

The Baboon Rock and Procession Shelter Hike, in the Cathedral Peak section of the Central Drakensberg, offers an exceptional blend of dramatic scenery, cultural heritage, and rare rock art. The route spans about 10 kilometres with roughly 500 metres of elevation gain, completed over four to five hours. While much of the trail is moderate, the steep climb to Baboon Rock makes this a moderate to extreme hike, as most of the elevation is gained in a short, intense section.

The Steep Ascent to Baboon Rock

The hike begins at the Cathedral Peak Golf Course Club House across undulating grasslands and sandstone ridges before tackling the demanding ascent of Baboon Rock. This section is steep and physically challenging, but the reward is a panoramic view over the Central Drakensberg’s towering cliffs and sweeping valleys. Baboon Rock, named for its distinctive baboon-like profile, is a striking landmark. Seasonal wildflowers, abundant birdlife, and occasional sightings of mountain reedbuck or rock hyrax enrich the climb.

A Rare Glimpse into San Spirituality

The hike’s highlight is Procession Shelter, one of the Drakensberg’s most important San rock art sites. Its principal panel is exceptionally rare, portraying a procession of part–Praying Mantis therianthropes – half-human, half-mantis beings linked to /Kaggen, a central figure in San cosmology.

The Story of /Kaggen the Trickster

Procession Shelter

/Kaggen, often depicted as a mantis, is a shape-shifter and creator in San belief. He embodies both wisdom and folly, creation and chaos. In different traditions, he is sometimes revered as the supreme spiritual being, while in others, he is one of several powerful entities. The Procession Shelter panel offers a rare and vivid insight into this complex figure’s place in San spiritual life.

Protected Heritage

Because of its cultural significance and vulnerability, Procession Shelter is not open to the general public. Visits require the presence of a registered San Rock Art Custodian, ensuring the site’s preservation and accurate interpretation.

Guided by an Expert

This hike is led by James Seymour, a registered mountain, nature, and culture guide and accredited San Rock Art Custodian. James weaves together the area’s geology, ecology, and history, transforming the hike into both a physical adventure and a cultural journey.
